See a Hotel Renovation in Carlsbad That’s Good for Guests

The new look features custom approaches to a classic appearance.

When the team behind the Park Hyatt Aviara luxury resort in Carlsbad, California, was preparing to remodel the hotel’s lobby, their goals were clear: Create outdoor views of the sea and golf course, enhance the flow of traffic and gathering spaces for a better guest experience, and retain the elegance and symmetry that marked the resort’s architecture. The hotel’s common area also needed to include more open-air spaces with large openings for an organic indoor-outdoor experience.

Walls of windows and hinged doors mimic interior openings throughout the resort.

Since the resort boasts a classic appearance, matching the symmetry and style of the architecture was paramount. To address this, the sales team at window dealer True View collaborated with the experts at Western Window Systems to create an aesthetic harmony between moving glass walls, arched transoms, fixed windows, and operable doors in the resort’s lobby, bar, and restaurant areas.

Guests can enjoy the connected spaces and outdoor views created by the lobby’s centerpiece door.

The chief undertaking of the project was to create the widest opening possible between interior common spaces and an exterior garden with an ocean view. As the centerpiece of the lobby, the massive opening needed a product that could fully open the expanse, was easy for staff to operate, and didn’t encroach on the building’s space. And the technical requirements were strict: it needed to cover the largest possible opening, have the maximum amount of glass without visible metal, a flush threshold, and low maintenance aluminum framing. The solution was Western Window Systems’ seven-panel Series 7500 Bi-Fold Door.
To match the lines of the operable doors to the lines of the fixed windows in the lounge area, the teams at Western Window Systems and True View created a custom approach to fixed windows that mimicked the sightlines, frame depth, base height, and profiles of the moveable doors. This made the appearance consistent across all fenestration products, using Western Window Systems Series 600 Fixed Windows and Series 900 Hinged Doors. Field fabrication skills ensured every installation met this standard.

Hinged doors and fixed windows provide ample sunlight while maintaining symmetry throughout the resort.

Due to the western exposure of the restaurant and bar, a critical requirement was to provide high-performance glazing that would conserve energy use and keep guests comfortable. With Cardinal Glass’s low-E 366 coating and argon-filled dual-pane glass, the resort could keep the drapes open during the evening hours so guests could enjoy the views without the discomfort of the direct sun over the Pacific Ocean.

The luxury resort used fixed windows to imitate the sightlines and profiles of the moveable doors.

By utilizing Western Window Systems’ moving glass walls, hinge doors and windows, the Park Hyatt Aviara luxury resort team was able to renovate its common areas so guests could enjoy large inviting spaces, beautiful views, and the best outdoor living Southern California has to offer.
