A Refreshing Idea in Beverly Hills

2018 Sunset Idea House updates a classic 1955 ranch-style home.

The popular Sunset Idea House concept has returned to Beverly Hills with what’s being called a “refresh” of a classic 1955 ranch-style home – and indoor-outdoor living is a big part of the dwelling’s new unique charm.

The lounge area opens to the green backyard through a large sliding glass door.

The lounge area is one of several that open to the handsome backyard.

“The question we asked ourselves was how to create ‘wow’ moments without a full-scale remodel,” says designer Joe Bowcott.

The answer lies in the home’s use of big glass.

A pivot door and large fixed window in the home’s entryway provide energy efficiency to go along with clean, contemporary aesthetics.

To make the most of the area’s year-round weather and the home’s attractive backyard (complete with a pool, spa and sitting area), Bowcott, president of LA-based Pemwood Designs, took advantage of an open floor plan and huge moving walls of glass to blur the transition from the indoors to the outdoors.

“Large openings and big glass were essential to bringing the indoor-outdoor living aspect of the home to life,” he says. “We were able to really push the feeling of openness outdoors.”

The centerpiece of the indoor-outdoor living space is a two giant  four-panel bi-fold door from Western Window Systems that, when opened, lets fresh Southern California air course through the dining and living area (as well as office and lounge rooms) of the 2,000-square-foot home.

“The glass door is beautiful and effortless, and the clean lines of the product fit perfectly with this remodel,” says Bowcott. “It frames the view of the outdoor space and unfolds to create a truly lovely experience for the homeowners and their guests.”

Large glass windows create an inviting space to the backyard and pool on the exterior of the home.

Sliding glass doors  that open to the pool and deck area also appear in the aforementioned lounge and office, while two sliders in the master suite also allow unfettered access to a lush backyard.

When opened, the two four-panel bi-fold doors let fresh Southern California air course through the living and dining area.
A modern, open kitchen is bedecked with gray and white marble countertops and light wood cabinetry among its high-end appliances. Two large sliding windows frame appealing views of the front yard. A dramatic black and white bathroom, with dual sinks, walk-in shower, and a large soaking tub, rounds out the 2018 Sunset Idea House. Towering fixed windows flank a Western Window Systems’  hinged door , giving residents yet another portal to the beautiful backyard.
